Iran has declared its intention to create a new “exclusion zone” near the crucial maritime passage of the Strait of Hormuz, a move aimed at intercepting vessels it suspects of trying to navigate through the area. Mohsen Rezaei, who recently assumed the role of head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, outlined that this zone would stretch from the vicinity of the U.S. naval blockade toward the Strait of Hormuz and into the Arabian Gulf. Rezaei indicated that ships entering this zone with the goal of crossing the strait might be added to an Iranian sanctions list.
This announcement comes on the heels of a significant uptick in hostilities, marked by a U.S. attack on three Iranian oil tankers following Iran’s ballistic missile strikes on U.S. warships. Iran also reported that it had targeted an unmanned U.S. vessel trying to access the strait, a claim that U.S. military officials have denied. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital conduit for global oil and gas shipments, and any disruption in this waterway could have far-reaching implications for energy prices and the global economy.
In response to these tensions, the United States has positioned naval forces to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports, aiming to curb Tehran’s ability to export oil. This military maneuvering comes alongside heightened economic sanctions on Iran after diplomatic talks between the two nations crumbled.
