Qatar played a significant role in the recent Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Committee of Ministers of Social Affairs and Social Development meeting held in Bahrain, aimed at bolstering regional social welfare and development efforts. The gathering focused on enhancing cooperation among GCC member states, with an emphasis on sharing expertise and launching joint initiatives to tackle various social challenges.
The meeting saw the participation of Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, who represented Qatar. Discussions centered on implementing the committee’s work plan for 2026–2030, reviewing existing Gulf-wide decisions, and exploring new strategies to improve social programs in response to evolving community needs.
A key topic of the meeting was disability rights, which included deliberations on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the proposal to establish a regular Gulf forum dedicated to disability issues. Additionally, the impact of artificial intelligence on children’s rights was examined, alongside opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies. Plans for a regional report on children’s rights and future prospects in GCC countries were also on the table.
Further discussions involved strengthening cooperation on women’s issues and considering new initiatives to advance social development throughout the Gulf region. The ministers emphasized the importance of coordination on childhood protection and welfare to ensure comprehensive regional strategies.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Al Nuaimi attended a ceremony recognizing notable figures and projects in civil social work. Several Qatari individuals and initiatives were honored for their contributions, highlighting Qatar’s active participation and achievements in the field of social development.
