During a recent address at the Lucerne Lake Summit, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani reinforced his nation’s enduring dedication to diplomacy and dialogue as essential tools for achieving peace and stability in the region. Highlighting the global implications of ongoing regional conflicts, he noted their significant effects on the global economy, international trade, energy markets, and the lives of billions worldwide. Al Thani cited the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a stark example of how regional tensions can disrupt crucial global energy supplies and trade routes, emphasizing that maintaining the security of this vital maritime corridor is a collective international responsibility.
The prime minister characterized the current period as one of the most challenging the region has faced, marked by uncertainty and escalating tensions. He reiterated Qatar’s steadfast support for diplomatic engagement, asserting that dialogue rather than confrontation is the only sustainable path to achieving security. Al Thani expressed optimism that the newly signed memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran could pave the way for enhanced development, cooperation, and prosperity throughout the region.
Al Thani highlighted the memorandum as a significant opportunity to build trust and advance toward a more stable future. However, he cautioned that the signing of the memorandum is merely the first step. The forthcoming technical negotiations are expected to play a crucial role in transforming commitments into tangible outcomes, thereby ensuring the agreement’s success.
Qatar has vowed to continue collaborating with international partners to bolster dialogue, uphold international law, foster trust, and support peaceful solutions that enhance both regional and global security. At the summit, Qatar played a mediating role alongside Pakistan, facilitating discussions between the United States and Iran aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting agreement on the issues outlined in the memorandum of understanding.
