Austria and Qatar are commemorating 55 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting their strong partnership in diplomacy, trade, culture, and education. Austrian Ambassador to Qatar Erika Bernhard underscored Qatar’s significant role in regional and international mediation efforts, praising its commitment to promoting dialogue, peace, and security. Speaking during Austria’s National Day celebrations in Doha, Bernhard emphasized the importance of Qatar’s dedication to conflict resolution amid ongoing regional challenges.
The year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Embassy’s establishment in Doha. Austria recognized Qatar’s independence in October 1971, setting the stage for over five decades of diplomatic cooperation. This longstanding relationship has been reinforced through high-level exchanges, including political consultations in Vienna and a meeting between Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Ambassador Bernhard highlighted Qatar’s openness to cultural exchange and international dialogue, recalling its participation in the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Forum held in Vienna in 2013. She expressed gratitude to Qatari authorities for their support during a recent regional crisis, particularly in assisting stranded passengers and facilitating the departure of Austrian citizens. Many Austrians living in Qatar regard the country as a second home and contribute to its economic, educational, cultural, and social development.
Austria’s commitment to international law and peaceful cooperation remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Ambassador Bernhard reiterated her country’s stance on permanent neutrality, adopted in 1955, which signifies military non-alignment rather than political indifference. With continued diplomatic efforts, Austria and Qatar aim to further strengthen their bilateral relations, building on a shared history of collaboration and mutual respect.
