In a gesture that underscores the deep ties between India and Qatar, Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju traveled to Doha to express India’s condolences over the passing of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit reaffirms the strong and enduring relationship between the two nations.
While in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivering condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju acknowledged the Father Amir as a visionary figure who significantly contributed to Qatar’s development and the enhancement of the strategic partnership with India. He noted that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns his loss and holds his accomplishments in high regard.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the late Father Amir, recognizing him as a true friend of India. Modi commended Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for his vital role in fostering the close bilateral ties between the two countries.
In honor of the Father Amir’s passing, India observed a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. During this period, the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and official entertainment activities were paused as a mark of respect.
