Marvel and Pixar Properties Get AI Video Capabilities

by admin477351

Marvel and Pixar properties are getting AI video capabilities through Disney’s $1 billion OpenAI investment and licensing partnership. The three-year deal grants Sora access to over 200 characters from Disney’s entertainment portfolio for user-generated content.

The partnership announced Thursday allows Sora users to create short social videos featuring beloved characters through text-based prompts. These AI-generated videos can be viewed and shared across platforms, opening new creative possibilities for fans. The agreement specifically prohibits the reproduction of talent likenesses or voices.

Disney’s commitment to OpenAI encompasses both consumer and operational applications. The entertainment giant will utilize OpenAI’s tools for new product development and experiences, while deploying ChatGPT for employee productivity. This dual approach reflects Disney’s comprehensive AI strategy.

CEO Bob Iger characterized the partnership as representing an important moment for the entertainment sector. He emphasized Disney’s intention to responsibly extend its storytelling reach through generative AI while protecting creators and their work. This messaging appears designed to ease concerns from entertainment professionals.

Hollywood studios have generally resisted AI partnerships, concerned about data usage and union conflicts. OpenAI has pursued conversations with several major studios about Sora’s potential, but Disney’s agreement marks a breakthrough. The platform’s September update introduced social features, enabling users to generate videos from text descriptions, view community content, and produce AI avatars that can be incorporated into videos with appropriate permissions.
