President Trump’s hopes for a quick summit with Vladimir Putin are on hold. A US official stated Tuesday that “no plans” exist for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
This is a direct reversal of Trump’s announcement last week of a Budapest summit “within two weeks,” which he made after a call with the Russian leader.
The Kremlin also confirmed the delay, with a spokesperson stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a meeting.
The president’s announcement did trigger a “productive” call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Despite this, the anonymous US official said a follow-up meeting between the diplomats was “not necessary,” effectively shelving the summit.
