From CEO to Defendant: Leiweke Charged in Arena Deal Gone Wrong

by admin477351

Tim Leiweke’s high-powered career in the sports business has come to a halt after federal authorities charged him with rigging the bid for a major university arena. The Moody Center, a $388 million project in Austin, now sits at the heart of a conspiracy investigation.
The Justice Department alleges that Leiweke conspired with Legends Hospitality to eliminate competition. The alleged agreement allowed Leiweke’s Oak View Group to become the sole bidder, a maneuver that authorities claim defrauded taxpayers and violated competition laws.
With the venue already built and operational since 2022, the legal aftermath threatens to undo much of what was seen as a successful venture. Leiweke, now facing up to 10 years in prison, has stepped down from his leadership role at OVG.
The case raises serious questions about ethical boundaries in large-scale development projects—especially those tied to public institutions like the University of Texas.
