Demonstrating the resilience of the UK automotive sector, Lotus has confirmed its Hethel factory in Norfolk will remain operational. The sports car maker provided this assurance to Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, quashing fears of a production shift to the US and securing 1,300 jobs.
The urgent Sunday meeting was a direct response to concerns that Lotus, under Chinese ownership, was considering manufacturing its Emira sports car in the US after pausing Hethel production in mid-May due to tariffs. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson confirmed Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus is poised to resume full operations as US tariffs on car imports are set to decrease, improving the viability of its significant exports to the American market. The company had previously stated that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand,” emphasizing its strong connection to its British heritage.
The government’s active support for the automotive industry, including substantial funding for capital and R&D, complements Lotus’s commitment. This collective effort ensures the continued vitality of the Hethel facility as a hub for advanced automotive engineering.
