The APEC summit in South Korea will be the setting for a critical meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, as a fresh trade war erupts.
A recent period of calm was shattered by China’s rare earth export controls and a subsequent US threat of 100% tariffs from November 1.
New US port fees on Chinese ships and retaliatory countermeasures from Beijing have further escalated the situation.
Speaking from Japan, President Trump nonetheless projected extreme confidence. “That’s a big meeting, and I think it’s going to work out very well,” he stated.
Trump, whose Asia trip is focused on trade, added the meeting would be “fantastic” and “great for everybody.”
